Auto accidents can be a pain in the neck, literally. Dr. Zvirbliss and I have seen a big increase in the number of people who have been involved in either fender benders, or more serious auto accidents recently with the weather changing to ice and snow.
First and foremost if you get involved in an automobile accident, it is imparative that you get an xray of the neck or lower back. This is the only way to see if you have ligamentous damage. An MRI will be ordered to see if you have a disc injury.
Alot of these accidents seem like “no big deal”, but the pain and impairment can effect you for many years to come if you don’t correct the underlying problem. The best way for me to explain this, to compare it to a heart attack. If you have a heart attack today, that means the underlying problem was probably going on for years, however you didn’t feel the pain for years, you felt the pain of the heart attack.
Same goes for automobile accidents. You can have underlying ligamentous sprain/strains, or your muscles just feel sore, but those same problems, turn into bigger problems down the road.
Time is off the essence when involved in an auto accident. Research shows the faster you take care of muscles, ligaments, and discs, the faster you will heal.
Please….be safe on the roads !
